Spotting is what mains water leaves behind when it evaporates on glass. The water goes; the dissolved minerals stay, and they show as a haze in low sun.
Deposit or etch?
Fresh deposits wipe off with the right approach. If spots have baked on over years, the mineral can etch the glass surface, and no cleaning method will restore that - only polishing or replacement will.

Why we use purified water
Reverse-osmosis water has the minerals stripped out, so it dries with nothing left behind. That is why the glass can be left to dry rather than squeegeed and buffed.
Sprinklers, run-off and render dust
Repeat spotting usually has a source: a sprinkler head, a leaking overflow, or lime run-off from a sill above. Fixing the source stops the cycle.
