PL20: from Yelverton to Princetown, the exposed moor

PL20 covers the widest range of conditions of any of our districts: sheltered river villages at Bere Ferrers and Weir Quay, commuter housing at Yelverton and Horrabridge, and Princetown at over 1,400 feet where the weather is in a category of its own.

PL20 covers 24 places we work in, 7.1 to 19.1 miles from our base at 58 Reddington Road, Plymouth (Devon, West Devon Borough Council) - all inside our 20-mile radius of Plymouth.

Altitude changes everything

Princetown, Hexworthy and Two Bridges sit high on the moor. More rain, more wind, more frost cycles and long periods where a wall simply never dries. Growth there is faster and more persistent than anywhere else within twenty miles of Plymouth.

Down at Bere Alston and Weir Quay, seven miles away and several hundred feet lower, the same materials behave like a normal Devon village.

Frost and moss on slate

Moss holding water on a slate roof is a real problem at altitude. Water expands as it freezes and it works at the laps and the nail holes. Getting the moss off a high moor roof is maintenance, not appearance.

Planning around the seasons

There is a sensible window for treatment work up here, and it is not January. We would rather book you for spring or early autumn than take a deposit for a job the weather will undo.

Reached via A386, B3212, B3357, local lanes off A386. Recorded wall finishes: granite, painted render, Dartmoor granite. Roof coverings: natural slate, slate.

Questions we get asked in PL20

Can you work in Princetown in winter?
Sometimes, but treatment work is far more effective in a settled spell. We will be honest about timing.
Is moss on a moor roof urgent?
More so than lower down, because of frost damage. It is worth dealing with before a hard winter rather than after.
Do you cover the Bere peninsula?
Yes - Bere Alston, Bere Ferrers and Weir Quay are all comfortably inside the radius.
